How to install a drill bit

Anyone who likes carpentry work would definitely want to know how to install a drill bit. It is always better to have this knowledge, in case you want to drill a wall to put in a screw, or drill it for any other purpose. Learn the easy way to install and use a drill bit.

Resources Required:
1. Chuck key
2. Drill bit
3. Screwdriver

Instructions:

Depending on your model,
1. The chuck is placed at the rotating end of the drill.

2. Next to the chuck there lies a hole in which you insert the chuck key. If incase you don’t have a chuck key, buy one from the hardware store.

3. Rotate the key towards the left in order to loosen the chuck and adjust the hole according to the size of you drill bit.

4. Always remember to insert the correct end of the drill bit in to the hole. Check if it is fitted properly; rotate the chuck key to the right.

5. Tighten the chuck, in order to hold the drill bit in place. Tighten till it turns no more and then use. The drill bit should be fitted in till the design on the drill bit is correctly aligned with the chuck.

1. Check the drill bit before placing it into the drill. The right bit should be installed depending on what item you are going to drill.
2. Once the drill has been turned on, do not attempt to touch the drill bit.
3. ‘Twisted’ drill bits should be used for working with wood, metal or plastic.
4. ‘Spade’ bits are used to make large holes through wood and metal.
5. ‘Masonry’ bits are used to drill through concrete and bricks.
6. In case you lose your chuck key, use a spade drill bit to put it in the hole. Use the screwdriver to adjust the level of tightness required.
7. Wear goggles or safety glasses when drilling. You could get dust, wood or concrete particles, or splinters in your eyes.
8. Do not use the drilling machine for an extended period of time at one stretch, it could burn out. Let it cool for intervals when carpentering.
9. Using a clamp or vice, fix the material on which you are working.

Things To Watch Out For
1. Check that the drill is not connected to an electric power point before beginning the installation.
2. Rusted drill bits are not a good choice to use with your drill.
3. Keep drills away from kids.
