If kitchen is your forte and you love spending time in this area of your house, it will be a good idea to set up a kitchen desk for your office work or any other desk work like writing a cheque or paying the bills online. The kitchen desk may not function as a full-fledged office desk, however can be very handy to run the errands. Here are some pointers that you must keep in mind while designing a small kitchen desk:

1. Take Stock: First of all, take a stock of the essentials for your kitchen desk apart from your computer and other gadgets. Like if your kitchen desk will be next to the frequently used door, you must keep a basket for keys. Designate power holders for your cell phones and put a mail holder for your postal mails. Also have a drawer for essential novelties like pens, scissors, papers, batteries etc.

2. Comfort Zone: The trickiest part is to find the perfect desk to set up as a small kitchen desk. The desk must have at least 24 inches of counter space to accommodate seating. The clearance of 36 inches can be ideal as it will give you more space, hence more comfort to perform the desk work. There must be adequate space to push the chair below the desk.

3. Work it: Keep a combination of open and closed cabinets for avoiding the layer of grease. Allot shelves to cook books and the trash can along with paper shredder, phone jack, lighting and cable or internet connection.

4. Add a chalkboard backsplash: Adding chalkboard or dartboard can add some fun element to your kitchen desk and will also be functional.

5. Choose an accent cabinet color and accent tile: Add life to your small kitchen desk area and break the monotony of the kitchen. Add colored or mismatched tiles behind the desk area for the refreshing look of your work space.

6. Integrate the desk in front of a window: To keep the kitchen desk well-lit and to avoid being claustrophobic, set up the desk near the window. It will keep the desk amply bright and refreshing to work.

7. Go for furniture details: It’s important to get into the details of the furniture. So that you don’t make it too high or too low to drop all your grocery shopping before it goes into the right place.

8. Desk as a baking center: If you want to have the multiple and alternate use of the kitchen desk, you can use the desk as a baking center, bar or serving station when you are not using the desk. All you need to do is keep your counter down at 30 inches instead of standard 36 inches.

9. Carve out a niche for a message center: If your kitchen is not large enough to accommodate a desk, settle for a smaller counter height message center where you can sit and write.

10. Go wireless: Another great option if you don’t have spacious kitchen is to go wireless with your laptop and other gadgets like printer and scanner. Find a cabinet or drawer to keep your laptop when you are not using it.

11. Carve out a spot in the mudroom: If you don’t have ample space for a kitchen desk, it’s advisable to set up your work desk in any other ignored part of the house, decorate it and make it a great place to work.
