Creating a Cosy Contemporary Living Room

The living room is perhaps the most ‘lived-in’ room in the entire house and is on show to all of your friends and family who come to visit. That’s why creating a beautiful living room is probably one of the most important things you will do when it comes to your home. Although vintage inspired everything has been particularly popular of late, contemporary is fighting back and has found its way back into a huge amount of living room décor this year. Achieving a modern lounge area, whilst retaining a cosy place to curl up and watch your favourite television show can be two quite tricky things to combine, but it’s all about finding balance. Here are some ideas to help you achieve your cosy yet contemporary living room, that won’t cost you the earth.

Declutter
Clutter is something we are all guilty of, there are just so many beautiful things out there to buy, and it’s just so hard to resist. It’s okay to have lots of lovely possessions, but when it comes to creating a contemporary haven, then having a clutter free, clean cut living room is definitely the first step towards this. This will also help to create a cosy, relaxed atmosphere, as ensuring all clutter is out of the way means there are less places for dust to collect and can free up some space. Shelving can be a great way of freeing up some space and allows you to make a feature of all of your most treasured possessions.

Minimalist Furniture
When it comes to choosing furniture, one thing you should not do is go overboard and buy lots of interesting but mismatched pieces. Keep it simple. Opt for things that work well together, as contemporary is all about keeping things clean cut and simple. Many furniture companies, such as David Phillips, offer furniture packages which cover your whole home and are collections of furniture designed to complement each other whilst still retaining an air of individuality. Remember to choose furniture that works well with your chosen colour scheme and don’t just choose something that looks good but is just awful to sit on, as you want your guests to feel relaxed in your home and your sofa must be comfortable as well as aesthetically pleasing. Colour schemes such as browns, blacks and earth greys are ideal for contemporary living rooms, or if you’re a little more adventurous, brighter, primary colours can work well too.

Simple Colour Schemes
Choosing to have a contemporary living room means that you must choose a simple colour scheme to go with it. Dependent on what colour your furniture is, white can often be the best port of call when it comes to your walls. However, if you are trying to create a warmer, more inviting atmosphere, then opt for something with warmer undertones such as cream, but remember, keep it simple. This will allow you to add some more personal touches to the walls too and adding shelves in dark colours will give you the space you need to display those all-important items and to keep your coffee table clutter free. Framing photographs in black frames adds a personal touch, whilst accentuating your all-white walls and still keeping its clean appearance.
