With technology evolving at an amazingly fast pace, new terms and definitions keep coming up. “Light pollution” is a distinct term that was added into the environment dictionary. The source of energy used and the way lights are engineered has led to an ever rising problem of pollution.

A group of four designers, Dr. Lin Hui-Hsiung, Huang Shao-Wei, Chiang Chung-Kai and Yang Wen-Hsun, came up with the idea of “Starrynight” lights. The intent behind the design was to make efficient use of energy in order to keep light pollution at bay and to revitalize the evergreen effect of night sky.

The lamp has a transparent light collecting module which performs the basic functionality. Provided by the Mechanical and Systems Research Laboratories [MSL], it acts as the outer lampshade thereby increasing the visual beauty for home interiors. When the main bulb is switched on, this module collects the light energy and converts it into electricity which in turn charges the battery and solar cells inside the structure. The power from the battery is then used to capacitate the starry light LEDs. Now on switching the lamp into night mode, the recycled energy is used to turn on the LEDs and give the surroundings a night sky effect.

Starrynight lamp is a combination of green energy with the urban lifestyle. Tired of the city life and smoggy skies, people never get bored of peering at the stars. If work and time constraints don’t allow us to enjoy the twinkling beauty, we can always try to bring it home; right into the living room. This enables people to feel the ambience of the night beauty while being proud of saving energy.
