5 things to do before you move into a new home

Moving home is both an exciting and stressful experience. There is so much that you need to organise and get done before you leave, and it’s easy to forget something in the chaos of it all.  If you’ve already started to feel the strain, below you’ll discover five of the top things you need to do before you head off to your new home.

1. Organise your furniture

One of the most stressful things about moving house is having to organise everything and move it to its proper place. If you are paying a removals company to move your stuff, it would help if you place tags on your furniture to show which room it goes in. The last thing you want to be doing when you arrive at your new home is carrying heavy furniture to its proper place.

2. Re-direct your mail

Have you thought about how you are going to get your post after you move? It is actually pretty straight forward to re-direct your mail, but it does cost money. When you re-direct, all mail that would usually go to your old address will automatically go to your new one. This gives you chance to write to everyone and let them know your address has changed. This is a particularly important step as the last thing you want is for your bills and personal details to fall into the hands of the new owners.

3. Check out the water shut off point/circuit breaker

Ideally you should know where the circuit breaker and water shut off points are in your new home. If you’re moving into new builds Chelmsford, you may also need to label the circuit breaker so you know which breakers control which areas.

4. Get the locks changed

Admittedly this may seem like a drastic step. However, when you move into a new property, you don’t know whether there are any keys to the home floating about. Having the locks changed guarantees nobody else will be able to get in.

5. Have electrical equipment serviced

It can be extremely useful to get the electrical equipment in the new home serviced before you move. That way you will know that everything is in full working order.

Moving can be extremely stressful, but the above tips can help to save a lot of hassle. The earlier you start planning for the move, the easier it will be and you’ll also be less likely to forget anything important.
