Dwell Hunting: Contemporary house in traditional Bay Ridge

Bay Ridge home or Snyder home if you call it by the name of the owners. Jim and Susie Snyder own a masterpiece of a house in Bay Ridge, Annapolis. It stands out from all the counterparts, as most of the houses in the area are beach cottages. So, this house design is more of a novelty and an eye candy. Designed by Bohl architects, house is built on a curve. This house was originally a beach cottage, overgrown with plants, no heat, no air-conditioning and was not very attractive as well, so the present status of the house is quite a revelation. The task of the architects was just not remodeling a house, but completely re-doing it, which was a challenge looking at the things this place did not have. The house is designed in such a way that every main room drinks in from the water of Lake Ogelton. Views of fantastical water is just an example of the beauty that surrounds the house. The house’s orientation gives great views from all the sides. The interiors and the exteriors integrate natural materials like cedar and granite.

By using materials like stones, glass, and wood the owners are trying to keep it natural in their own special way. A two-story open fireplace stack provides for fireplaces for four rooms, two on the ground-floor and two on the upper-story. The main entrance welcomes you with a staircase and windows that overlooks the front. The second-floor has a transparent panel made of real thick Plexiglas. There stands a library with a good book collection adjacent to the family room. It also has a secret panel concealed with books that allows access to Jim’s secret study. The kitchen also has a brilliant mix of traditional birch and cherry cabinets with contemporary appliances. They have also taken care off their entertainment, as the first floor features a billiard room with complete bar. A basement is a common feature of most of the houses, but what really sets this apart is that it has an elevator that allows them to tow their luggage up and down. It is definitely an inspirational abode. I don’t know when I will build my own house but if I do in this life time, it will look something like this house.
