How to clean a coffee maker

A clean coffee maker brews better tasting coffee. Drip coffee makers accumulate grounds, grease, and other impurities on the parts. At times, mineral deposits called “scales” form inside, especially in areas having contact with hard water. Here is how to clean a coffee maker:

Things You Will Need:
1. White vinegar
2. Water
3. Kitchen sponge
4. Liquid dish soap (optional)

Instructions:
1. Insert the filter basket into the coffee maker.
2. Fill the reservoir, that is the pot, with a water and vinegar solution. If the pot hasn’t been cleaned for long, use a 1:1 solution. Else, a 2:1 solution should suffice.
3. Pour the solution into the coffee maker.
4. Run the coffee maker on, and turn it off after the brewing process is complete.
5. Remove the filter from the coffee maker and discard the contents.
6. Let it cool for 10 to 15 minutes.
7. Run the coffee maker with plain cold water, for rinsing.
8. Repeat the rinsing process until there is no smell of vinegar left.
9. Wipe the coffee maker with a damp or soapy sponge on the outside. Then, wipe it dry.

Tips
1. Clean the coffee maker once every week or month, depending on the frequency of use.
2. Never pour cold liquid into a hot coffee pot that is made from glass or Pyrex. It may shatter.
3. Never wash the coffee pot with soap. Do not wash it in the dishwasher, either.
4. Never use the coffee pot to pour water into the reservoir.
5. To prevent further scaling occurring inside the coffee maker, place a glass marble in the water chamber. The scales will accumulate on the marble instead of the interiors of the chamber. Wash the marble after every use.
