1. What motivated you to go into designing? And where do you get the ideas from?

Sarah: The sense that there is something missing… something that needs to be discovered, is why I started in design, this continues to motivate me. Ideas come from life, from emotions…It’s like alchemy, a mixture of things brings about something new.

2. How do you conceptualize the design you’re working on and incorporate it into your design process?

Sarah: Close my eyes + visualize the conceptual thought in a three dimensional form….. Something usually appears….

3. Sarah, please acquaint our readers regarding ‘concept cocoon screens’?

Sarah: The idea behind these was to create a functional object in space, which also represented a concept. So that the inanimate object could allude to various concepts, such as excitement, or sensuality… The person in viewing this object becomes cocooned by the concept.

4. Could you walk us through the general steps you take when you’re designing interiors?

Sarah: Assess the brief of the client…. visualize the physical manifestation of the brief… document it through drawings…. hopefully see it be built the way you visualized it.

5. Do you think there’s something you’re most proud of so far, one particular project that came off really well?

Sarah: I really like a project that I was a finalist in the dulux colour awards with this year.

It was a hypothetical design for a recycling facility that used colors of the chakras to give it a resonating presence… to create a recycling center as an object of desire….. not purely a functional object.

6. What are some of the common decorating mistakes made by homeowners? What’s your advice on how to avoid or correct those mistakes?

Sarah: The worst mistake is to be scared!!
Go with your instinct as to what you want – and don’t worry about what other people will think – good or bad – don’t try to impress other people with your designs – do them to feed something in yourself that you need.

7. What are some of the emerging trends that you see in the field of interior design?

Sarah: Color!!….feeling!!… maybe that’s just wishful thinking…
