Kashiwado Chair by Isamu Kenmochi

The huge piece of furniture pictured above is the Kashiwado chair, designed by Isamu Kenmochi for Tendo Japan in 1961.The chair symbolizes contemporary design.

The artisans chop numerous blocks of the Japanese cedar in order to create the Kashiwado chair. For the purpose, best wood with the most tree-rings is selected. The blocks of wood are neatly carved and placed on top of each other, with the help of a special procedure. When the chair gets its final shape, it is polished and coated to give it a glossy look. The whole process takes several days.
