Nespresso Squash: A vertical magnetized coffee table designed by Tiago Almeid

Lisbon-based designer and illustrator menosketiago AKA Tiago Almeida has come up with a radical new idea that takes the traditional idea behind what a table is supposed to look like and the established notions of how a table can be used, and launches it in a direction no one could have possibly imagined. The Nespresso Squash is a subversive concept that takes the otherwise horizontal coffee table design on a vertical plane.

The design is basically comprised of a single magnetized pole that can hold onto coffee mugs made out of ceramic/metallic compounds. This would give the cups the appearance of floating in the air. The stainless steel pole also saves a lot of space on the floor by taking advantage of vertical space.

The design may be gimmicky but makes a lot of sense for smaller living and working spaces since a traditional coffee table takes up a lot of square inches in a room but provides only a limited usable space or storage.

Since cups can be attached to the pole freely, it makes it possible to stash a lot more of them in a smaller space allowing the pole to be stood in a hallway or a small corner. Although the designer intends for the pole to be primarily a mug holder, it can just as easily be used for other utensils or accessories and can even be used as a place to display art.
