Overview

The Department of Visual Arts at Stellenbosch has created some of the most interesting and amazing paper furniture using the paper mache technique. It is basically a simple technique that requires gluing papers to create three dimensional shapes.

This paper furniture range brilliantly showcases innovative and interesting design using paper in a sustainable way. The furniture in this range are made from recycled, reconstituted and re-used paper.

The main aim of the Department of Visual Arts at Stellenbosch is to get more use of waste paper before it gets industrially recycled.

What’s unique

When we create furniture made from re-used and waste paper, we trim down the numbers of tree harvesting every year. With the use of paper mache technique, producing interesting paper furniture can really help us to conserve trees and other natural resources.

Moreover, it has been proven in a research that 10 flat layers of paper mache can easily hold up to hundred kilograms while cylindrical or egg shaped furniture crafted using this technique can hold the same weight in just 10 layers of sheets.

High points

Paper indeed is an ideal construction material for furniture due to its easy availability. Moreover, it is 100% recyclable and doesn’t affect our environment in a negative way.

The Department of Visual Arts aims to create amazing paper furniture using the waste paper produced by the ‘Mac Lab’.

In addition, paper furniture is perfect for students and children as there is no possibility of getting hurt. Moreover, the stains, spots or marks can be easily camouflaged by just adding another sheet of paper.
