Is Contemporary architecture distinctly different to Modern?

In spite of searching out various articles and information related to contemporary architecture, I could not really differentiate between modern and contemporary architecture for my office. What makes me ask the question is an incident that happened a few days ago, when I was discussing about renovation of my office in Michigan. My friend asked me to let him know whether I want contemporary style, or modern style of architecture for my office. Moreover, I don’t intend to turn up the office décor into something jazzy, therefore, I would like to know from some expert whether what is the ideal theme of architecture to go for, wherein the space is not more than 2500sq feet, and the work is that of publishing house. Can somebody please advice? Thanks.
