Smart plates to track your food intake

Creative Plate

It is said that “Health is Wealth”. The call to stay fit is getting louder and louder these days with many people now spending time and money to stay in shape. Some creative minds have come up with plates that can track the amount of food which we use. These plates are a perfect item for those who are conscious about their fitness and are willing to walk that extra mile to stay fit and healthy. Here is a list of five creative plates to track your food intake:

1. Fukushima Plate

Fukushima Plate

Tragedies always teach us some lessons, which we should learn and try to spread as much as we can. The earthquake in Japan in 2011 was a major tragedy because it led to leakage of radioactive gases from the nuclear power in Japanese town of Fukushima. The Fukushima Plate, about which we are talking here, is more or less a security concept because this creative plate comes with inbuilt radioactive meter, which can visualize the level of contamination in the food. Radioactivity spreads through food chains and cause serious damages to our body, so this plate is a very useful as it detect the food’s contamination level and allows the user to know about the impending danger.

The Fukushima plate features OLED rings, which remain off when the level of contamination in food is less than the limit set by the government or health authorities. One ring gets illuminated when there is slight contamination but it does not mean any danger. When two rings get illuminated, it means that the food’s health factor is undermined and when all three rings get illuminated, it means that the level of contamination of food is beyond the set limit and the food is unsafe for consumption.

2. Talking digital plate

Talking digital plate

The credit fro designing Talking digital plate named Mandometer goes to Swedish scientists at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institutet. This creative plate takes the concept of food intake monitoring to the next level because it features a digital screen that helps in monitoring the intake of food and this plate alerts the users when he/she moves a step closer towards overeating.

This plate features an electronic scale, which is fitted beneath the plate. The small screen of this digital plate depicts the graph which shows the amount of food consumed. This screen also shows the rate at which the user is consuming the food. The moment the user starts deviating from the ideal graph, a computerized voice would make a request for slow down. This is a brilliant idea because we normally tend to over eat when the food on the platter is tasty and of our choice.

3. Smart Plate

Smart Plate

The smart plate named “Nutrismart” is the brainchild of industrial designer Hannes Harms. This creative plate is in prototype stages now. This plate helps the user in staying healthy and fit by giving them detailed nutritional information. Harms has used embedded RFID tag technology in this plate to track the food intake and provide detailed nutritional information about the food eaten by the user.

The foods with edible RFID tags are used by Nutrismart to provide detailed information. It may be recalled that Kodak had developed RFID tags’ food for medical purposes. The RFID reader used in the plate tracks the nutritional information of the RFID tags’ foods and this information is then transferred to the receptive devices including laptops, smartphones, iPads, etc. This innovative plate also features LED indicators that glows when the user put a food containing certain undesirable allergen or undesired fat on the plate.

The design of this plate is pretty simply and like normal plate but areas is marked in it for different foods. This plate is designed and created by a British company and it is now available for sale in the US as well.
