Jin Weon Park promotes green living with Grey Water Garden Kit

Grey Water System by Jin Weon Park

Industrial designer Jin Weon Park has created a rather handy new system that allows users to maximize their water resources and filter their grey water so that it can be used to water indoor plants. Unlike other grey water filtration systems available in the market, the Grey Water Garden Kit uses the natural filtration properties of soil and plants to purify leftover water. Since, the device does not use any chemicals, the water that users get at the end of the purification cycle is free of any undesirable toxins, thus allowing the system to be safely operated by children as well.

The small scale DIY system uses a miniaturized irrigation system along the lines of an aqueduct to naturally purify grey water. The idea basically revives classical technology and applies it to modern living thus providing a brand new solution to the modern water crisis. The kit features a tall cylindrical tube that is filled with three layers of soils, the top most and the largest layer being fine sand, the next layer being coarse sand and the last layer being composed of grave. The user simply has to supply the grey water into this kit and as the water makes its way down the various layers, impurities are automatically cleaned and supplied to an outlet via a PVC pipe.

The water is of course not suitable for domestic use, but it can be safely used to water indoor gardens or planters. The functional design thus proves to be sufficiently pragmatic without losing any aesthetic appeal, and its environmentally friendly design adds to its usefulness in the modern home.
