Landscaping tips for spring

Spring Landscaping

Spring is hardly a month away, so it’s time you pull up your sleeves and start preparing the lawn for the upcoming season. Chilly winter weather makes plant growth dormant; hence spring lawns have to be prepared with extra care. A little love and care will ensure that the green area of your house keeps beaming with plant life as the season changes from spring to summer. Preparing the garden for the spring season is no rocket science and doesn’t require much time. So, follow some really easy tips for lush landscaping, which will ensure you get a healthy and well maintained lawn all through the year.

1) Clean your lawn

Cleaning up the lawn by removing leaves, dead foliage, yard trimmings and all kinds of debris should be the first thing on your list. Ornamented grasses like Russian Sage and Butterfly Bush should be cut back within 4-6 inches depending on the plant.

2) Remove weeds

Take out time and check your lawn for any kind of weed growth. Clear all weeds and take out a few minutes every week to make sure no new weed growth occurs.

3) Loosening compact soil

Compact soil doesn’t allow nutrients and water to get till the roots of the plants, which makes it difficult for them to flourish. Check for compactness by piercing a garden fork in the ground. The tines of the fork should go in at least 2 inches to make sure the soil is not compact.

4) Order seeds and plants

For the latest selection of plants, it will be great if you browse through the many gardening catalogs available in the market or online. It will list all the new varieties and will also help you extract some great ideas to beautify your garden further. Make sure you order early as the most popular varieties may soon run out of stock. Place them in your garden when the time is right.

5) Sowing seeds

Spring is the best season to sow seeds, as they grow within a few weeks of sowing. Apart from this, overseeding lawns to fill up bare areas and spots that is a result of heavy traffic or neglect will beautify the area further.

6) Fertilizing

Keep your lawn in a blooming state by fertilizing grass, flowers and shrubs. Spring is an important time of the year to fertilize plants as it will help replenish all the food reserves that the yard draws in a dormant wintry state. Go for anything that is free from pesticides, like packaged organic fertilizers and compost.

7) Mulching

If you want to transform your flower bed from lifeless to stunning, then adding a fresh layer of mulch is all you have to do. A four inch layer over the top of soil will put off weeds and make sure that plants retain enough moisture.

8) Pest control

Pest control is necessary to maintain a pristine spring lawn. Chilly weather may result in winter diseases like Bermuda dead spot and proper care needs to be taken to recover the lawn from such diseases. Timely fertilizer application and mowing will help the lawn recover fast.

9) Mowing

While mowing, make sure that you don’t set the mower to a very low height as this will expose the soil surface to a lot of sunlight and stored nutrients will also get removed. Such a condition can actually increase weed growth, hence should be completely avoided. Opt for a human powered or electric mower instead of a gas guzzling one to keep your surroundings clean.

10) Check the irrigation system

Check your irrigation system, like the hose attachment or the in-ground sprinkler system, to make sure they are in a perfect working condition. If you haven’t used the in-ground sprinkler in a few months then check that both the pump and the tank operate properly. Replace anything faulty by checking and testing the irrigation system properly.

So, get the spring spirit in your lawn by thinking creatively and make it look nothing less than perfect by following these easy tips.
