Rohm unveils straight LED tube lamp that can sense human presence

Technology is changing the way we function in our daily lives. As things are getting automated, it has led to energy savings and reduced human efforts. Latest in the series are the straight tube LED lamps launched by Rohm Co Ltd that come with attached human sensors. The LED lamps light up when someone comes under the sensor and as the person moves away, lights are automatically turned off in about 90 seconds.

Though these LED tube lamps with human sensor are supposed to save the energy, however, they have some shortcomings. The sensor in the tube light detects the change of infrared light, so if the person below the sensor doesn’t move then the sensor won’t detect the changes and the light will automatically be tuned off. Apart from that, the light consumes 0.5W of power even when it is off. Moreover, it is necessary to remove the ballast before replacing fluorescent lamps with them.

As far as the appearance of the tube lamps is concerned, it is like any other ordinary LED straight tube lamp, except the presence of the human sensor. Rohm will start manufacturing some 100,000 units a month of the LED tube lamps in June 2011 in Dalian, China.
