Transforming broken china crockery into contemporary mosaic

china crockery

The project:

The ethereal translucence of china have drawn the likes of kings and commoners just the same. Everyone owns their indulgent pieces of china-ware. But what if the fragile darlings get chipped or break? can you ever just throw them out? The patterns, the make, the beauty are all still resting in those shards of china. Only you should know how to restore all of that. Thus this project guides one in understanding how to transform these china pieces into beautiful contemporary mosaic.

Difficulty level:

It is fairly simply to execute, however if you are a beginner you can use the patterns offered for inspiration. Anyone who is well acquainted with recycle and craft projects can look up or create their own designs. There are two ways of going about this:

1.Direct method – if your china-ware has different designs on both sides then this method comes in handy. Here the china-ware itself becomes the surface of the mosaic. It is stuck right side up so that the design of the crockery becomes the surface.

2.Indirect method – Here the china-ware is stuck face down on brown paper which is then set in a bed of grout, flipped over and the paper can be washed away later when the mosaic has set.

Estimated cost:

The mosaic you make out of broken china pieces of crockery that you already own is almost a zero-cost project`(the nominal amount of glue and paper expenses can be ignored). Also if you want to buy china, you can haunt places like antique shops where the china is very reasonably priced and come in pretty english pattens.

Resources required:

The foremost requirement is fragments of beautiful china and other than that you will require glue, brown paper and some grout for binding. It is a very economical process, which requires minimal effort and cost.

Instructions:

Any chipped or cracked china has to be smashed into little fragments to initiate this project.
Firstly, you should cover the china in a towel and smash it gently with a hammer. Also keep a check on the size of the fragments so that you can create a pattern which you like on the mosaic. Large chunks and small pieces can be create very different visual effects.

Quick tips:

The grout that you use has to be mixed with water to get a mud-like consistency and has to be laid down in the same thickness all over the china pieces. If the grout is too stiff and dry, the china may not get glued properly to the grout and may come off after a while.

Things to watch our for:

Always be careful while handling broken china as the fine pieces can pierce your hands or little splinters can fly into your eyes. So try to protect your hands with gloves. Also a secret tip to creating a fabulous pattern on the mosaic is to not underestimate the handles of china cups. They are beautiful and create a great layout on the mosaic.
