5 Signs That it’s Time to Replace Your Fence

When putting up your fence, you knew it would not always remain perfect. It would wear and tear with time. So, to keep it in top shape, you take out your tools every now and then and repair the damage.

But there comes a point when no amount of repairs can save your beloved fence. Like it or not, you must put down your tools and replace it. So how do you know when it’s time to do so? Here are signs of what to watch for.

1. Partial or Total Collapse

Nothing says it’s time to replace the fence louder than a collapsed part. This may be because of age, a tree branch falling on it, or you backing your car up into it. Regardless of the reason, once a part of the fence collapses, the fence no longer plays its protective part.

Unwelcome guests and pets will soon invade your yard. Your kids, on the other hand, can leave the yard without you realizing it. And what’s worse, when one part falls, the rest of the fence soon follows.

2. Rotting

But why do fences collapse? Rotting – the worse sign of fence damage – tops the list of causes. Wood fences are particularly prone to rotting, especially if left untreated.

Upon closer inspection, the rustic, traditional look that such fences have can suddenly reveal itself as rot. Fortunately, if you catch the problem early, you can save the fence. But if not, you must put up a new one.

3. Broken or Missing Panels

Sometimes, the fence still stands, but only just. Some panels break and fall off, leaving you with nothing but a fence in name only. If passers-by can see through your fence or walk through the gaps, replace the broken or missing panels. But if the damage is too extensive, replace the fence. Companies like Northland Fence can repair missing panels as well build complete fences, but in most cases, it’s better to replace the fence in its entirety.

4. Leaning

At other times, your fence stands just fine but an angle – a hallmark of aging. Unfortunately, once a fence starts leaning, it never stops. Age renders it vulnerable to strong winds and heavy rain, making it lean even further.

At some point, you’ll intervene and adjust the posts. But after repeated adjustments, you’ll throw in the towel and either watch the fence collapse or replace it before it does so.

5. Discoloring

The four signs we’ve mentioned above point to structural damage. But what would make you replace a structurally sound fence? The first is discoloring, a result of being exposed to the elements for long.

When this happens, the fence, though structurally sound, becomes unsightly. And although you treat the fence, once it loses its color, it’ll never regain it. To some people, this is a deal breaker, so they replace the fence.

If your fence exhibits any of these signs, then it’s definitely time to consider a replacement. Thankfully, there are tons of great contractors out there that will be more than happy to help you and build the fence of your dreams.
