Dwell Hunting: UFO houseboat has an energy efficient indoor climate

UFO, the Unique Floating Object is a houseboat developed by CC A/S Design. Danfoss, based on latest technologies in heat-pumps, floor heaters and ventilation has created an energy efficient indoor climate for this houseboat. This solution by Danfoss is able to reduce 50% of traditional energy consumption. However, this cut down energy consumption does not lower the comfort in any way. Danfoss has basically used the ocean as an energy source. By using indirect solar energy from the sea, a heat pump system, producing heat and hot water and heat recovery ventilation system a perfect indoor climate is maintained.

“The annual average temperature of Copenhagen Harbour is approximately 9° C. It is therefore possible to extract heat from the seawater by laying a coil wrapped with hoses on the seabed beneath the houseboat, and by using the heat pump, we can than exploit the energy for heating floor heaters and domestic water used,” explains Mads Rasmussen, Product Solution Manager at Danfoss A/S Sales in Denmark. With such breakthroughs in technology, I am sure we won’t regret if our city is submerged under water very soon.
