Never underestimate the effect that lack of sleep can have on your life. You can suffer with a lack of energy which can affect your performance at work or even your safety when you are driving. You can also become more irritable and your stress levels can increase.

This not only affects your own life but also the lives of people you come into contact with. You can see why it’s so important to get the right amount of sleep each night. In the case of most people, this means you should be aiming to sleep for around seven to nine hours in a twenty-four hour period.

A major factor in ensuring that you sleep well is optimising the environment in which you sleep. As is the case with pretty much every activity you do in life, having the right environment makes it a lot easier to get the length and quality of sleep you need to help you remain happy and healthy. We are going to take a look at two of the most important in your sleeping environment, that you may want to have a think about.

Make sure your bed is comfortable

Arguably, the most important part of your sleeping environment is the bed that you sleep on. If you do not have a comfortable bed then there is a very good chance that you will not sleep well. This is why making sure you have the right mattress for you is so important. There are many people who prefer a softer mattress but who, in time, find this does not give them enough support, resulting in back aches and pains.

There are many different types of mattress available, from which you can find one that suits your needs. As well as having the right mattress, it’s also important to make sure that your bedding is kept clean in order to reduce the potential for bed bugs which can cause problems, especially if you have an allergy.

Blocking out light

One of the most important features of your sleeping environment is the amount of light that is present. During the day it’s a good idea to get outside and be exposed to natural light. This helps your brain to recognise the difference between night and day. At night, when you are trying to sleep then you should try and limit the amount of light around you.

In an ideal situation, the room in which you are sleeping should be completely dark. If you are having problems making this happen, you may want to try using blackout curtains or wearing an eye mask. You should definitely try and eliminate all sources of blue light; the type that is emitted by electronic devices. This is why it is not a good idea to have a TV in your bedroom.

If you are having problems sleeping then hopefully our tips will help you to improve the situation and get you those full nights of sleep that you need.
