Liven up your living space with Knots & Beads curtains

The Knots and Beads curtain by designer, Hella Jongerius, combines industrial methods of production along with crafts and the celebration of history. It has been commissioned by the United Nations for its east and west facades of its Delegates’ Lounge. Made of porcelain beads and knotted yarn, the curtains will be 7 meters high and 14 meters wide. The knots are all different styled fishing knots which have been derived from the rich maritime history of the Netherlands. The irregularities present in the different knots and beads that have been used soften the severe grid feel of the otherwise patterned curtain.

The beads that have been utilized in the making of the curtain have been derived from the handicraft ceramic industry. They have been created by working in close collaboration with the craftsmen of the Royal Tichelaar in Makkum which is the oldest ceramic company in the country ( having been in existence from 1572). The beads are made through a special glazing procedure. The objects are fired and then plunged into the liquid glazing substance. They are then fired again to harden the glaze.

This procedure of glazing leaves visibly, the unglazed clay which has been excavated from the surroundings of Royal Tichelaar. Since it has a color and texture of its own which is unique to this location, there is an added charm to the curtain. Thus, a piece of Netherlands arrives in New York, adorning one of the most prestigious buildings of the world.
