Merel Karhof makes furniture using wind knitting

Wind power is fast becoming one of the most widely adopted
renewable energy sources. While wind farms are mostly used to provide
electricity to the grid, designer Merel Karhof has employed the natural
resource to create materials needed for her latest line of furniture.

Dubbed Windworks, the furniture pieces are upholstered using
materials that are produced exclusively by using wind power. The designer set
up a fully wind-powered knitting machine called the Wind Knitting Factory three
years ago which basically knits fabrics.

When the breeze is really flowing, the machine knits rapidly
and it knits slowly when the wind speed ebbs. So far, Karhof had only been
producing items like scarves using her set up though with her furniture line,
she really has upped the ante for sustainably made furniture around the world.

Windworks is something of a collaborative project between Karhof
and two other millers. Located in the northern part of The Netherlands, the set
up sees the sawmill cut and assemble the wood parts which are then transported
to the color mill through the river.

The color miller then dyes the yarn using natural colors and
the stuff is then transported to Karhof who knits the upholstery and finishes
the items.
