Nevis Pool and Garden Pavilion brings the outdoors in

The Nevis Pool and Garden Pavilion is a unique new contemporary garden addition in Washington DC that is designed to sit as the perfect middle ground between the wilderness of the woodlands that border the property and the planned landscaped house. The pavilion was designed by Robert M. Gurney and seeks to reinforce the comfort of the home while providing an additional outdoor space for entertaining guests and relaxing within natural surroundings.

The space was designed to tackle the architectural challenges that arose out of the specific needs of the customer. Since the pavilion was to be used as a natural oasis, it needed to be as much in harmony with nature as possible instead of being a forced presence on the landscape itself.

The pavilion is located right at the edge of the property which is marked by a line of very tall and mature trees. This provided the perfect natural and enveloping backdrop against which the stone and glass pavilion could be placed. To flood the interior with plenty of natural light through the day, the pavilion uses five glass doors with steel frames and frameless glass corner walls.

A dry-stacked enclosed wall constructed out of slate makes a natural yet sturdy addition to the structure and plays well with the mahogany wood elements. The low pitched roof is furnished in stainless steel and the reflective surface contrasts well with the furnishings and materials used through the interior landscape. The interior also boasts of a large Rumford fireplace and Douglas-fir ceilings.
