Nextdoor App arranges virtual talks and meetings with neighbours

Social networking is the happening revolution today and virtual communities, virtual societies and, in fact, virtual worlds themselves are on the rise. The revolution has been fuelled by the rapid growth of tablets and smartphones. Adding another impetus to this revolution is the NextDoor app, which promises to acquaint you with your neighbours without you actually having to talk to them!

Here is how the app works. Being accessible over mobile phones or the web, it has a database of over 17,000 neighborhoods in the US. Members who wish to enlist do so via their real names and real, verifiable addresses. The account is password protected and sharing happens like any other social networking site like Facebook or LinkedIn. The only difference is that the kind of information shared varies quite a bit.

The idea of the app is to allow neighbours share important information about the neighbourhood . Thus, the participants are able to share electricians’ numbers, notify the other of local events, recommend a particular baby-sitter or even warn against a particular mail-thief!

As with all other apps, Nextdoor also arrives with notifications and real-time alerts which are sure to be a great boon in times of emergencies. The company has plans to expand to other neighbourhoods in other countries like Brazil and Singapore as well within an year or so. One canbe sure that the time of online neighbourhood communities is now!

Of course, for those that miss the face-to-face interactions with ‘real’ people, the app is going to be another disappointment and a step backwards. But for those that are reclusive by nature and yet seek to know what is happening around, it will be a big blessing.
