Things that lead to bathroom dampness, and how you can avoid it

Bathroom is a place that somehow skips the attention of several people, when considering the basic maintenance it needs. If it is any other room, you would wipe it dry and ensure that it is spick and span. Dampness in bathroom might be considered as a usual thing, but it has the potential to cause harm in the long run.

Dampness can lead to cracks in tiles, and if the walls are not the tiled ones, fungus can grow on the wall. Dampness can also cause the bathroom floor can be slippery, leading to accidents. It is on damp surface that microorganisms thrive.

It is not that hard to keep the bathroom dry and all you will need is good ventilation. Before that you should know the real causes of bathroom dampness and the possible solutions to them. Here are a few:

Lack of ventilation: Anything when trapped can create congestion. Similarly, air should have space to circulate. If there is no air circulation, then you can be sure that the place is not healthy. Make sure that your bathroom is well ventilated for enough air circulation. It will alone limit dampness to a great extent.

More condensation: Condensation too is one of the main causes behind bathroom dampness.  Condensation can lead to more dampness in bathroom creating problems such as bad smell, peeling of walls and fungus.

Install an extractor fan: Apart from good ventilation and heating, an extractor fan too can ensure proper air circulation, thus reducing dampness in the bathroom.

Carry out repair work regularly: Fix any leakages or faults as soon as it is detected, even if it is a minor one.  This will ensure that water does not drip in the bathroom.

Prefer cold showers to hot ones: Whenever possible, if the weather permits, use cold shower because hot showers let out more water vapors that are collected in the bathroom, increasing its dampness.

Floor mats need a time out: If there are floor mats or any rugs on the bathroom floor, make sure that they are dried out in the open regularly. It will not only reduce the moisture in them, but will also kill the germs if present in them.

Keep the bathroom floor dry as far as possible: After the use of the bathroom, scrub the floor dry. A dry bathroom means it is cleaner and that means it is good for your physical health.
