Tips to decorate your home: Take cues from the celebs

It doesn’t take much to make your home look as lavishly dressed as some celebs home. Here are a few ideas, which you can incorporate to change the decor of your home. These ideas are plucked off directly from some celebs homes like Tommy Hilfiger, Alicia Silverstone, Jessica Alba, Virginia Madsen and Emilio Estevez to name a few. Take cues from these celebs and work creatively around the same ideas for a less expensive decor.

Forever lawn

The waterless lawn chosen by Jessica Alba is made completely from recycled tires. Of course, she had the added advantage of getting 25 percent off her water bill for doing something green. This bill does not include the water used for the pool. Another green idea was to use saline water so that chemicals are not used when draining the water. Alba also used hemp and bamboo linens for the entire home.

Bamboo flooring

Virginia Madsen chose bamboo flooring for her living room on the first floor, the dining room and the entrance. This also contains palmwood which is very durable. She also used the same wood to make the poolside table. She used recycled glass from Coverings Etc for her kitchen countertop as it comes in a variety of colors and they are completely recycled. Amazingly, she also used old denim for the house insulation as it is claimed to be 40 percent more effective than other insulation products. She also opted for second hand furnishings that were thrown away from people’s homes.

An eco friendly wine cellar

You will be surprised to know that Emilio Estevez, the star in ‘The Breakfast Club’, chose eco friendly items for his wine cellar. Everything from the door that was torn down from a store in Portugal to molding from an old railway station in India were all salvaged from throwaways. The paint was without VOC and the chandelier was from an antique shop. And to top it all, the gym flooring was recycled from Stanford University.

Natural materials

Alicia Silverstone and her husband Christopher Jaracki believed in making their entire home in Los Angeles, environmentally friendly. Their advice is to go for natural materials for every part of the home decor. Even the art pieces they have used in their home is made from environment friendly materials like mango wood. Nicky Hilton believes in using bold wallpaper like banana leaves for her kitchen walls. Nia Long likes to decorate her home with ethnic art pieces which she forages for in the local flea market. A lovely woven basket with an intricate design adorns her living room giving it a charming old world look.

Eco-friendly elements

This eco friendly home is renovated from an old chicory kiln and belongs to the Australian pop star Kylie Minogue. Wood paneling has been used for the entire house. It even boasts an organic farm producing fruits and vegetables. It even has a grapevine. The entrance is a prosaic stone structure holding the gates to the charming countryside eco home.
