Overview

The customizable and modular seating system, designed by Scott Wilson for Quinze & Milan (Q&M) was originally conceived as a group seating solution in large public space. Along with the Belgium based Quinze & Milan, Scot Wilson began to work upon the model design, which he eventually began to call M2. His vision of the highway as well as the public spaces for resting combined gave him this modular and flexible seating system, which eventually became the M2 Landscape Lounge. This was originally designed for the Seattle Central Library after meeting all other budget and ADA requirements by the company. The M2 Landscape Lounge seating system is an award winning design for its large capacity without hindering any space. Its aesthetic beauty also fits in fluidly with the rest of the buildings interiors.

Features of the M2

A lot of thought went into the designing of this seating system and the designer, Scot Wilson made keen observation towards functionality and durability for public usage. His design also had to fit in with the ultra crisp and graphic aesthetics of the library and could not overpower that. His design therefore needed to be complemented with the whole setting by the use of skin toned foam for the chairs. The seating system has been given a lot of options by way of configuration as it is based on the square meter grid. Each piece has its own square frame to fit in and interlocks with the other pieces so it can be expanded according to requirement. There are different shapes such as, the straight extruded piece, L-shape corner piece, table unit and a flat ottoman piece. Its polyurethane foam finishing can be upholstered or left as it is. When it came to the seam on the corner unit, Scot Wilson took this as a big challenge since two pieces of foam had to be connected. Since there was not upholstery the two pieces had to be seamed together without any mismatch showing up.

Unique aspect of the design

The versatility of the M2 seating is apparent where four pieces of foam can easily accommodate around ten people without taking up space. For the table, Scott used oak and zebra wood to complement the seats, while the base metal for the seating is of chrome plated or powder coated silver.

The M2 seating system is truly unique and can be used for other public areas as it allows for a lot of flexibility. It also makes for open communication with other neighboring structures and easily accessible due to its broad surfaces.
