Tips and tricks for home maintenance in the spring

Home is a vital asset for every homeowner, as they have built or redecorated it spending a lot of time and money. However, even the most planned and well-executed homes require regular maintenance. Generally, homeowners are so busy that they cannot spare time for maintaining their abode at regular intervals. Spring is the ideal time for cleaning and repairing your home for the rest of the year. Make a checklist and write down the different types of maintenance tasks that you want to undertake this spring. Dr Prem shared some essential guidelines in the following for spring home maintenance.

Start with the roof

The roof not only protects the residents inside from harsh weather conditions but also enhances the longevity of your home. It has to face rain, hail, snowfall and harsh sunrays. That is why you should start by inspecting the roof and check out if it needs any repair. Yearly inspection of roofs is necessary irrespective of what it is made of. If you do not repair small areas in your roof, then it can aggravate and cause severe damage to your home. Absence of shingles, broken shingles, general aging and leakage are some of the common problems that need your immediate attention. Also clean the roof and make sure that the water or rain drainage system from the roof is working fine.

Next look down the gutters

 gutters

The gutters have to work well in every season, be it rainy season or winter. When you are done with the roof, turn your attention towards the gutters. Spring is the right time to clean the gutters thoroughly. Get rid of the fallen leaves, dirt and waste elements from the gutters. Also, check if the gutter is leaking. Take immediate actions for repairing leaky or loose gutter. These measures will prevent dirty water from getting inside your basement or crawl spaces. The downspout should be clean, so that water can pass swiftly through it. Make sure that the downspout is at least two feet away from your foundation walls.

Check the HVAC filters

 HVAC filters

Your family deserves to breathe clean air and you deserve to save on electricity bills. You can achieve both goals, if you check the HVAC filters this season and get it repaired or changed as required. When the filter chokes with dirt and grime, your AC has to work harder to cool the room. The summer months are on the verge and if you do not change the old filter, be ready to pay more. Clean filters will ensure higher levels of air purity and thus, good health.

Look for cracked concrete

This spring, try to be as thorough in your inspection of concrete as you can. If you live in a region that experience heavy snowfall, then you should definitely check the concrete walkways or driveway of your home. You must take care of shifting cement or cracks immediately. You can use caulk and cement crack fillers for mending the cracks neatly.

Clean the overgrowth

 trim the bushes

Spring is the right time to chop the unsightly and unruly vines. Cut the overgrown hedges and trim the bushes to enhance the appearance of your home and surroundings. Make sure that the branches of hedges, bushes and trees are all at least seven feet away from the walls. Else, there is a high chance of mildew growth and moisture damage. The tree branches can damage your sidings and roofs, so get them chopped. While you are at it, also remove weeds and foliage from the lawn and mow it.

Seal your doors and windows

 Seal your doors

Winters are hard and rough. The strong cold winds may have damaged the windows and made them leaky. Check the caulking around doors and windows. Recaulk if necessary and seal the windows and doors properly. Appropriate insulation is necessary for reducing energy wastage, saving on electricity bills and preventing water damage.

Summary

Repairing and maintaining your home should top your priority list in the spring season. It is the best time to repair the leaky roof and windows, mend the drive way and trim the bushes.
