Top Tips for Choosing Bedding

While you may not normally give it much thought, choosing your bedding can have a big impact on your day to day life. A good night’s rest is recommended to ensure you’re working at full capacity the next day, and the right sheets, pillow and duvet covers can actually make all the difference.

There are number of things that contribute to the quality of a particular bedding set, but not many people are experts on the subject. Therefore, we’ve compiled a few tips for you to consider when making your purchase.

Thread Count

Wherever you go to buy your sheets, they will always be defined by their thread count – which is simply the number of threads in the cloth. The average is typically around the 200 mark, but higher quality and more luxurious products can have as many as 400.

The higher the amount, the better the sheets will be, as more threads means they will be durable, softer and generally more comfortable to sleep in. They’ll also not let as much, if any, light through – so you’ll be able to shut the early rising sun out when you need an extra half hour in bed!

Consider Colour and Pattern

Although not connected to the quality or the resistance of the materials, the colour and patterns of your bedding can be a decisive factor when making a purchase. You might have the most luxurious sheets in all the land, but if it looks ugly, you’re not going to want it to be sat in your room.

First of all, choose something you like and find appealing. Then, if you’re really concerned about the decorative aspects of your bedroom, think about how those colours will go with the rest of the space. Does it clash with the paint on the walls, or a bedside table you have? You might also have your personal preference with pattern too – but this is probably less important.

Think About the Season

The weather conditions can have a big impact on how well we sleep. In the summer, when it’s boiling hot even at night time, it can be incredibly difficult to drift off. Likewise in winter, the cold air can be unbearable at times so it’s important to keep warm.

One of the things to consider here is the weight – heavy duvets are ideal when the temperature is low, but when it’s high they can be very frustrating. Low thread counts are also more likely to let cold air through, so luxurious covers are ideal in the winter time.

Different Types of Cotton

This one is more about personal preference. There are various types of cotton for you to choose from, each with its own individual advantages and disadvantages. Pure cotton is a popular choice due to how natural and authentic it is, but some prefer polycotton – which contains polyester – because it lasts longer and is easier to wash.

More luxurious shoppers might prefer to splash out on Egyptian cotton, which has an incredibly high thread count (1000-1500). This is really the best of the best, it will leave you in ultimate comfort for years to come.
