Designer:

Ross Gardam

Manufacturer:

The Touch is manufactured, designed and produced locally in Melbourne.

Overview:

For Touch, designer Ross Gardam had worked in partnership with a glass blowing artisan to help create the product. The Touch, born from an aspiration by Ross Gardamm to work with new processes has the end result of being a great product. There are aluminium and glass options that can be chosen in the Touch and the pendants can be configured in groups too. After configuring, it can be placed on tables with the help of a stand. It offers different options so that it can function better.

Tools:

The Touch is a multi-functional lighting object that has a glass or anodized aluminium light shell. Also, having a glass finish that has an optional shade, the optional shade in the Touch slides over the glass version and thus enables to help provide a more directional light. The chandelier has various options and configurations that are possible across the material range. There is also the cord in the table version of Touch slides, that come through the pipe stand and thus allows the user to adjust.

The challenge:

One of the most problematic areas while making the Touch was the manufacturing process itself. After a lot of thinking, a two part mold was produced that helped create the aluminium spun pendant of the Touch. The mold also has another use. The mold is also used to create another mold which is used to blow glass into. In fact, the glass blowing actually requires a lot of experimentation before one gets the final result. The experimentation and project of the making of the Touch was one that was rewarding for both the designer and the glass blower in this case. In fact, the table version of the Touch also has a cord that slides through the pipe stand and thus allows the user to adjust without any problem.

What’s unique:

The Touch has a host of unique features. What takes the cake though is Touch’s ability to adapt itself to a great number of interior environments. The Touch also has a numerous number of material finishes and configurations and can provide a feature light source in any place and at any time.
